Austin Coffey-Moore joined Collaborative Insight Counseling Associates (CICA) as a pre-licensed psychotherapist in September 2023.
Austin takes a primarily person-centered and collaborative approach to therapy that includes acceptance, empathic understanding, and a non-judgemental stance. He believes that oftentimes people need a safe and comfortable space to process their thoughts and emotions in order to address the problems in their life.
Every individual has their own unique problems and ways of thinking. That is why Austin uses an integrative approach that is adapted to his client’s specific needs. He utilizes a combination of treatment modalities, including Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), narrative therapy, and family systems therapy. Austin is competent in both individual and couples therapy. He has worked with a wide variety of presenting issues including anxiety, depression, stress, racial identity, relationship issues, and life transitions.
As a Black therapist, Austin understands the significance of identity and how marginalized populations must navigate a society that is not supportive or inclusive of their differences. Austin is passionate about providing culturally competent therapy services to all diverse populations. His way of conducting therapy is trauma-informed, and inclusive of all marginalized populations including the LGBTQ+ community, neurodiverse individuals, immigrants, and people with physical differences. As an advocate of social justice, he is additionally interested in eliminating mental health disparities and stigma in communities of color.
Austin’s first experience in the field was as a residential counselor working with children, pre-teenagers, and young adults with various behavioral and mental health challenges at the Doctor Franklin Perkins School. He has also gained years of experience working with children on the Autism spectrum conducting Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy as a Behavior Therapist. Prior to joining CICA, Austin provided therapy to children in the Boston Public School System through the nonprofit organization Doc Wayne, as well as adults at Brockton Neighborhood Health Center.
Austin attended Fitchburg State University where he graduated with his B.S. in Psychology. He then went on to attend William James College in Newton, MA where he earned his M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, in which he completed the Couples & Families Track as well as a concentration in African-American & Caribbean Mental Health. Austin is currently pre-licensed and working towards obtaining licensure as both a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), as well as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT).
Fun Fact: Austin has been a huge fan of NBA Basketball since he was a child, and loves to root for his hometown Boston Celtics team. When he’s not watching the C’s, he enjoys golfing, playing video games, and eating tacos!
