Binh Nguyen joined Collaborative Insight Counseling Associates (CICA) as an independently licensed clinical psychotherapist in June 2024.
His approach to therapy is based in the narrative worldview, or otherwise referred to as Narrative Therapy. Core ideas like the importance of meaning-making, contextual histories of a problem, and centering the client’s knowledge and values, resonate with his view of mental health and wellness. He strongly relates to the narrative adage that ‘people are not the problem, the problem is the problem’. Binh also utilizes interventions from cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy to help clients solve and manage crises, while maintaining a strengths-based perspective for long-term change. Strategies to increase mindfulness, build emotional awareness, and linking the environment to our thoughts are some of tools clients walk away with in sessions.
Prior to joining the field of mental health and outpatient therapy, his experiences were rooted in service to others. He worked with Asian American students at the University of Connecticut, building a mentorship program to increase representation and community connections. At City Year Boston, a nonprofit focused on tackling the school-to-prison pipeline in major cities across the United States, he managed school partnerships and led teams of corps members through their 9-month service program. He familiarized himself with Boston’s diverse communities, working in Dorchester, Roxbury, and the South End. He built lasting, sustainable relationships with students, families, school administrators, in a concerted effort to address the systemic challenges of public education.
The desire to address these challenges outside of the classroom led him back to working with individuals at the ground-level. He pursued his MSW through Boston College, seeking to hone his skills in listening, relationship building, and advocacy. He has worked in various settings, including schools, health centers, college campuses, and more. He has supported clients with diverse presentations across the lifespan, from elementary school to the elder population, diagnoses like psychosis and major depression to acute stress, trauma, and adjustment disorders.
Identifying the lack of representation of Asian American mental health professionals, Binh hopes to work closer with the Asian/Asian American population in Boston, acknowledging that his position and racial identity could serve as a bridge into accessing quality mental health care. He has extensive experience working with young adults and youth in the public education and therapeutic space. He specializes in working with clients struggling with mood-related disorders, anxiety-related disorders, trauma, life transitions, familial conflict, and substance use issues.
Fun fact: Binh is an avid board gamer and console gamer! His current favorites: 7 Wonders and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! Binh also is not competitive but enjoys the art of trash-talking.
