Yunyao (Christie) Wu joined Collaborative Insight Counseling Associates (CICA) as an independently licensed clinical psychotherapist in September 2022.
Born and raised in Nanjing, China, Christie moved to the United States as a teenager in pursuit of a life that’s most authentic for her. Christie attended Tufts University where she earned her B.S. in Psychology, with a concentration in Clinical Psychology. After a few years of working in clinical research at an area hospital, she went on to earn her M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and became an independent Licensed Mental Health Clinician (LMHC) soon thereafter.
She specializes in working with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, self-esteem issues, family conflicts including domestic violence and intimate partner violence. Employing her native proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese allows her to extend culturally sensitive mental health care to Asian American communities where stigma around mental health continues to prevail. Her goal is to help clients heal from cultural, systemic, and generational trauma, and lead their lives in an authentic and fulfilling way.
Christie utilizes a holistic and integrative approach to develop treatment plans individual to each client, weaving together techniques from Eye Movement Desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), attachment-based, and psychodynamic therapy. Christie is an EMDR-trained clinician working towards her certification with EMDRIA.
Christie’s experience prior to joining the practice span diverse settings with multicultural populations, such as clinical research in addiction medicine among adults, clinical case management for chronically homeless elders, and outpatient counseling in an Asian-American non-profit agency. She has extensive experience working with clients (adults, couples, and families) struggling with mood/anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, acculturation difficulties, parenting, and issues of domestic violence. Christie’s clinical interests include learning about the interplay of cultural, historical and generational factors that result in the stigmatization and underutilization of mental health care among Asian-American communities.
Fun Fact: Christie is a dedicated student of yoga for 15 years, and loves unwinding to a slow Vinyasa flow with her two-year-old Pomeranian pup Bao
