J Wu, BA

pronouns: HE|HIM|HIS THEY|THEM|THEIRS

J. Wu joined Collaborative Insight Counseling Associates (CICA) as a Clinical Psychotherapist Intern in September 2022. J is offering individual therapy under the guidance of independently licensed CICA staff, including weekly supervision with Scott Thomson, LICSW and supplementary support from Raihaan Attawala, LMHC.

J strives to create resilient therapeutic relationships based in Liberation Health, which deconstructs dominant worldview messaging, examining the client’s internal and external oppressions. J is a particularly ardent believer in the value Liberation Health can have in helping unpack intergenerational struggles, as well as digging into the tensions, resilience, and joy of clients’ heritage.

J offers a therapeutic space to unpack themes of immigration, diaspora, and cultural estrangement. His clinical focus on psychodynamic and intersectional tools to help clients address stress, anxiety, and depression. He is experienced in leading individual and group sessions on queer identity, racial identity, and spiritual traditions. While his clinical and seminary training focused on psychodynamic Christian theology, he welcomes clients from all faith traditions and spiritual practices.

We may not be able to prevent baggage...

...but we CAN become stronger at unpacking, repacking, and traveling to our destinations.
— J Wu

J leverages firsthand lived experiences to provide insight into family estrangement, particularly the complex tension that can arise between cultural values and LGBT+ identity. He provides a systems-level approach on families of origin. He also works with clients to navigate joy and conflict in “found families,” and local communities. As a transgender man, he recognizes that self-discovery can be an extensive, non-linear process.

J is a dual MSW/MTS candidate at the Boston University School of Social Work and School of Theology, where he is currently completing his final year of coursework, and now completing the second year of clinical training toward his MSW at CICA. During his internship, he will undergo training in, and further develop his clinical skills in Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy among other modalities.

J’s work will take place under the expert supervision of Liz Anderson, LICSW & stewardship of Raihaan Attawala, LMHC, allowing for the care he delivers to be significantly discounted, as compared to his independently licensed clinical counterparts within the practice.
