What is a pre-licensed clinician?
Pre-licensed clinicians have completed their requisite graduate-level educational requirements, but are still accumulating the experience and clinical hours needed to be fully licensed. In order to become fully licensed, these clinicians must complete a number of hours under the supervision of an independently licensed clinician.
Social workers have a formalized intermediate license (“LCSW”), whereas mental health counselors/marriage & family therapists do not. Regardless, all LCSW, pre-LMHC, and pre-LMFT clinicians all have approximately the same level of experience and training!
What is clinical supervision?
Clinical supervision is a process of support and reflection that takes place between therapists. In the case of CICA’s pre-licensed clinicians, this means meeting with an independently licensed clinician on a weekly basis to discuss their current clients and receive supplemental guidance around treatment strategies and their broader therapeutic practice.
Will the supervising clinician be sitting in on sessions?
No. Supervising clinicians only provide external support, after your session has ended. During sessions conducted by a pre-licensed clinician, that clinician will be the only one in the room.
What does this mean for insurance, billing, and network status?
Pre-licensed clinicians are treated as having the same network status as their supervisor, instead of being independently contracted themselves. Sessions that are conducted by a pre-licensed clinician and billed to insurance are billed under their supervisor’s name.
Are pre-licensed clinicians still in school?
No, pre-licensed clinicians are not still in school. They have already completed their graduate degree, and are well on their way to becoming independently licensed clinicians.
